Keep a spray bottle of water nearby, and spritz your hair to keep it damp, as needed, while you apply the mask. Cover your hair with a plastic shower cap, cling wrap, or a tied plastic bag. Leave the mask in for 5-20 minutes. Make sure to keep your hair damp during the procedure. Then wash out the hair mask. Scrub your hair and scalp gently but well, under warm water. Rinse thoroughly, until the water runs clear.
